Veretski Pass played the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne last week. While they were in town, they recorded an interview and in-studio concert with the university's "Focus 580" talk radio program. Veretski Pass is a traditional klezmer trio with Cookie Segelstein on violin and viola; Josh Horowitz on tsimbl and accordion; and Stuart Brotman on bass, bassy, tillnca, and baraban. I'll admit not being familiar with Veretski Pass's work, but I'm a big fan of Josh Horowitz's work with Budowitz. this is probably the best and most "authentic" Klezmer group anywhere.
I'm glad you like them. I've heard a lot of good about them and plan on downloading their album from emusic.com sometime soon. If haven't checked out Budowitz (http://www.budowitz.com/) and the Muzsikas' "Maramaros" album, I'd bet you'd like them as well. All three groups are wonderful examples of what sometimes gets refered to as "museum klezmer" since they attempt to play music as it would have been played in a particular time and place. I'm not sure I accept that this makes them more "authentic" than a contemporary group that playing in a klezmer revival style. For me authenticity is playing unselfconciously from inside a tradition and both approaches would qualify. Regardless, Veretski Pass is marvelous.
